A walk through Elena, Bulgaria brings together old streets, Revival houses and stories passed down through generations. In this E-volution Media video, volunteers explore the town through its museums, churches and the people who care for its cultural heritage.

Svetoslav Petrov, director of the Museum of the Revival, introduces the town and shares two legends about its origins. One tells the story of a young woman named Elena; another connects the settlement with people seeking safety in the Balkan Mountains after the fall of Tarnovo. Presented as local legends, these stories offer a glimpse into the way the town remembers its past.
The conversation also introduces the museum complex, including the Church of Saint Nicholas, Kamburov Inn and Daskalolivnitsa. Along the way, the team visits the Church of the Assumption and learns about the cultural events held in the former church of Saint Nicholas.
The walk continues to Daskalolivnitsa, whose name is often translated as a “teacher factory”. The video explores its role in training teachers who carried new approaches to education to other towns.
Another stop is the birthplace of Ilarion Makariopolski. The museum opens a window onto his life, the struggle for an independent Bulgarian Church, and the connection between religious art, literature and everyday life. The preserved buildings and museum collections show why Elena remains closely associated with the Bulgarian Revival.
The video was created by volunteers of the BRCK Association as part of a short-term volunteering project under the European Solidarity Corps programme in Mindya, Bulgaria, during August–September 2026. It is in English with Bulgarian subtitles.
