At the end of May, the annual International Festival of Humor and Satire was held in Gabrovo, the so-called capital of humour, as Bulgarians say. The event was week-long and included various types of entertainment, such as the 25th Gabrovo Biennal of humour and satire in art, concerts and the famous Gabrovo carnival. It is the oldest carnival in Bulgaria and dates back to the 19th century. In 2022, the carnival theme was “Kot dodi, gad dodi”, which means: “Whatever comes, whenever it comes”. An essential part of the carnival is one strange ritual connected to Gabrovo’s humour. The festival’s symbol is a 4-meter-long cat, and the celebration begins with cutting its tail.
