Veliko Tarnovo: Where National Pride Shines in Independence Celebrations

On Sunday, September 22, 2024, Veliko Tarnovo, the historic Bulgarian city, hosted a grand celebration for Bulgaria’s Independence Day, drawing citizens and visitors together in an atmosphere of pride and national unity. This day symbolizes the country’s liberation from Ottoman rule in 1908 and marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Bulgarian people, especially in a city that was once the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire.

Beginning of the Celebrations: An Age-Old Tradition at Tsarevets Fortress

The official celebrations commenced solemnly, featuring a ceremonial inspection in front of the historic Tsarevets Fortress, one of the most prominent symbols of Bulgarian history. This annual tradition carries deep meanings associated with military and national pride. The event witnessed the acceptance of military formations by Raya Nazaryan, the Speaker of the National Assembly, as military academy students performed their salute, adding a formal touch to the festivities.

A Celebratory Display Expressing National Unity

Following the inspection, the festive events unfolded in the heart of the city, where thousands of families and visitors gathered in the streets of the old town to witness the grand parade. This procession, stretching through the historic streets, reflects the spirit of unity and solidarity among the Bulgarian people, bringing together participants from all over the country. The streets were filled with Bulgarian flags and children’s laughter, showcasing the pride of Bulgarians in their independence and freedom.

 Art and Culture at the Heart of the Celebration

This day was not just a historical occasion but also a vibrant cultural and artistic event. In front of the municipal building, the talents of the old capital dazzled with musical performances and folk dances that embody the rich Bulgarian heritage. A special participation from the artist Desislava brought an atmosphere of enthusiasm and national spirit, alongside remarkable performances from the city’s grand choir, reflecting the community’s cultural pride.

A Stunning Conclusion to the Celebrations 

At the conclusion of the festivities, attendees enjoyed a breathtaking audiovisual display titled “Tsarevgrad Tarnovo – Sound and Light,” which combines light and sound to showcase key moments in Bulgaria’s glorious history. The event culminated in a fireworks display that illuminated the sky over Veliko Tarnovo, making this day even more vibrant and joyful.

 

Celebrations in the Village of Blakovо: A Model of Local Unity

Simultaneously, the nearby village of Blakovo celebrated its special day, where over 600 people gathered in the renovated central square. The celebration included a blessing prayer and artistic performances by children and local artistic groups, reflecting the villagers’ commitment to preserving Bulgarian heritage. The square was renovated thanks to local donations and collaborative efforts, exemplifying community cooperation aimed at improving the village’s appearance.

A Reinforcement of National Identity

Independence Day in Veliko Tarnovo and Blakovo was an opportunity to reaffirm national values and cultural ties that unite the Bulgarian people. The national spirit shone brightly, emphasizing that Bulgaria’s independence is an occasion that brings everyone together in pride for their glorious past and promising future. Through these celebrations, Veliko Tarnovo continues to embody the spirit of Bulgaria, enhancing its traditions and heritage in every celebration and national commemoration.
